Recent reports from ESPN state that Manchester United are keen on signing Stade de Reims striker Hugo Ekitike in the upcoming transfer window as Erik Ten Hag looks set to add to options in the attacking department. Newcastle United made their best efforts to sign the French prodigy in January, but the Ligue 1 outfit demanded a humongous transfer fee as they were not keen on letting him leave in the middle of the season. However, with two years left on his contract at Stade Auguste Delaune, the 19-year-old forward could be available for as low as €15 million in the summer. Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Arsenal are also in the race for his signature.
‘Manchester United have made an enquiry over Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, sources told ESPN,’ – the report stated.
‘Ekitike fits the bill in that regard and sources said an approach has been made to the player’s representatives to find out his plans for next season.’
Having come through the ranks at Stade de Reims, Hugo Ekitike made his debut for the senior team in a 3–1 loss to Lorient on 17 October 2020. Over the course of the last two years, he has made 25 appearances for The Red and Whites, scoring ten goals and assisting three across all competitions.
Despite missing out on a significant chunk of the 2021/22 season due to an unfortunate hamstring injury, the 21-year-old has managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board – averaging 1.3 shots, 0.6 key passes, 0.9 dribbles, and 0.8 tackles per 90 minutes in the French top-flight. Capable of playing as a centre-forward or a left-winger, versatility is one of the Frenchman’s key strengths.
Why Arteta Must Make A Call ASAP
Arsenal failed to recruit a striker in the January transfer window despite pursuing a deal for Dusan Vlahovic. Later, the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left a gaping hole in Arsenal’s front line, and with Eddie Nketiah’s contract expiring at the end of the season there’s no doubt that Mikel Arteta needs to sign a forward who can act as a cover in the hour of need – and Hugo Ekitike fits the bill perfectly.
The 19-year-old could be the perfect signing keeping Arsenal ’s long-term goals in mind, especially for the €15 million price he is available for, so his recruitment will definitely strengthen the Gunners’ ranks at the top of the pitch.
Perhaps, Arteta should consider moving in for him ASAP.
