Amongst many of the things which have not worked out for Slaven Bilic and West Ham United this season, perhaps the most pressing issue has been the lack of a recognised centre-forward in the team. With a meagre 19 goals scored so far in 17 games, the Hammers certainly need further attacking options up top.
If latest reports are to be believed Sassuolo forward- Gregoire Defrel is the latest prospect to have caught the eye of the under pressure Slaven Bilic.
Bilic is keeping close tabs on the 25-year-old French striker who has shown remarkable improvement since his move from AS Cesena for £7m. He has performed well for the Italian side both domestically and in their maiden Europa League campaign. He is currently on 7 goals in Serie A.
Meanwhile, summer loanee from Juventus, Simone Zaza hasn’t clicked for the London side and is set for a return to his parent club in January. And while it may sound harsh, Andy Carroll can’t be trusted to shoulder the burden of carrying the strike-force on his own. And injuries are the only reason for this.
Defrel, who plays as a centre-forward is known for his versatile nature and can play on either wing. Coming in from the right, he has the vision to find passes and has the knack of taking shots and more often than not he troubles the keeper with his left foot. He is not the tallest yet has a strong physical presence. He will be the ideal candidate to partner Carroll upfront as their contrasting style of play can pave the way for a potentially successful partnership. Carroll is good with his knock-downs and the player’s intelligent runs can open up avenues for the Hammers.
As a forward, he doesn’t have the raw pace but can certainly make those darting runs over short distances which makes him a threat for the opposition. Defrel can be the man to initiate those attacks on the break though he has the habit of getting offside at times. But he will have a lot more creative players behind and beside him to make him a better and more clinical player.
West Ham United have gathered a respectable 7 points from the last 3 games and with the January transfer window around the corner, they should make a foray into the market and bolster their options in order to continue this upward foray.
The report also added that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also keeping a close eye on the player but West Ham’s greater need might just push the deal in their favour.
