In a recent report, Sport claimed that Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto has penned a new one-year contract. It is believed that the Spaniard has accepted the Catalan outfit’s offer for a fresh, one-year deal to extend his time at the Nou Camp.

Roberto’s Growing Struggles In Spanish Football

Roberto has played a bit-part role at the Catalan club as he has struggled to earn regular playing time for them during this campaign. The 30-year-old has registered two goals and one assist in 12 matches for Barca this season across all competitions.

The Spanish talent has made most of his appearances as a substitute which explains why he is only averaging 0.6 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 0.4 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield, based on his pass completion rate of 92% in the Spanish top-flight (stats via whoscored).

Roberto is an excellent passer of the ball and can do a little bit of everything at the centre of the park when he is playing well on the field. He remains a solid tackler of the ball and can even create some promising opportunities for others around him in the opposition half. However, injuries have often hampered his progress at the Nou Camp in recent years.

Still, the Spaniard remains a great squad player for Xavi to call upon when required. Hence, it makes sense for both the player and the Catalan club to extend their time together for another season.

At 30, Roberto is currently playing at his peak and would add more value to Xavi’s match-day squad. Plus, he knows what it takes to taste success at the Nou Camp.
