In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo claimed that Barcelona are set to resume contract talks with Sergi Roberto. It is believed that the Catalan giants are hoping to tie the Spanish midfield ace down to a new one-year deal with his current contract set to run out at the end of this campaign.
Roberto’s Unimpressive Season At The Nou Camp
Roberto is having an uneventful campaign in Spanish football as he has missed a major chunk of this campaign due to a hamstring injury. The 30-year-old has made only 12 appearances for the Catalan outfit this season, netting two goals and securing one assist in multiple competitions.
The Reus-born talent has seen most of his game time come off the bench which could be why he is only averaging 0.6 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 0.4 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even tidy with his ball distribution after making 92% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Barcelona Set To Open Contract Talks With Roberto: Good Move For Both Parties?
Roberto has served as a useful squad player at the Nou Camp over the past few years. He can anchor the midfield with conviction when he plays well on the field.
However, injuries have hampered his progress at the Catalan club. Plus, he has sometimes been guilty of being inconsistent when called up to feature for Xavi‘s first XI.
The Spanish talent’s current contract at the Nou Camp is set to expire in the summer. Thus, it makes sense for Barca to tie him down to a new short-term deal so that they can get a transfer fee for him later this year or use him as a rotational squad player next season.
At 30, Roberto has only got a handful of years left in him to play at a high level in top-flight football. Still, it seems like a good move for both the player and the Catalan outfit if the Spaniard ends up penning a fresh contract.
