In a recent report, Soccernet.ng mentioned that Newcastle United are facing stiff competition for Union Berlin frontman Taiwo Awoniyi. It has been claimed that the Magpies will have to rival West Ham United and Southampton among other clubs for the Nigerian centre-forward.
Awoniyi’s Recent Rise To Prominence In Germany
The 24-year-old has been a breath of fresh air in German football during this campaign as he has managed to establish himself as a productive forward in recent months. Awoniyi has taken part in 37 matches for the German outfit this season, banging in 17 goals and providing four assists across various competitions.
The talented striker has led the line well for the Berlin outfit based on his average of 2.1 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. However, he has to find a way to improve his link-up play when spearheading the attack up top as he has completed only 66% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Get Awoniyi On Board This Summer?
Awoniyi can make some well-timed runs in the attacking end of the field and has transformed himself into a prolific finisher in front of the opposition goal. He can even contribute by picking up an assist every now and then. However, Awoniyi needs to improve his ball distribution if he wants to be a success story in Premier League football someday.
The former Liverpool talent could be a decent signing for the Magpies as he will arguably be an upgrade over Chris Wood who has struggled to be prolific with his performances at St. James’ Park this season.
At 24, Awoniyi’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a good option for the Tyneside outfit to consider in the summer. The Nigerian marksman is good enough to help Newcastle challenge for a top-half finish in the Premier League next season. Thus, Eddie Howe would be wise to get Awoniyi on board when the transfer window reopens later this year.
