In a recent tweet, Marta Ramon Gorina on RAC1 revealed that Barcelona are hoping to open contract talks with Sergi Roberto this weekend. It has been stated that the Catalan giants are looking to extend the Spanish midfielder’s contract so that they can keep hold of him beyond this summer.

Roberto’s Diminishing Role At The Nou Camp

The 30-year-old has played a sporadic role for Barca during this campaign as he has struggled to earn regular game time in Spanish football after missing a lot of key games because of multiple injuries. The Spaniard has scored two goals and provided one assist in 12 matches for the Catalan giants this season across all fronts.

The Reus-born talent has seen most of his appearances come off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.6 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 0.4 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game in La Liga. However, Roberto has been accurate with his ball distribution after completing 92% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

Roberto is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger quickly to secure the ball back at the centre of the park. He is a tidy passer of the ball as well and knows what it takes to play in Barca’s style of play at the Nou Camp.

However, the Spanish talent has only served as a decent squad player at the Catalan club this season. He has been quite injury-prone of late, so Xavi will be taking a risk if he decides to offer him a new deal.
