In a recent report, Football.London revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are the favourities to land West Bromwich Albion keeper Sam Johnstone. It has been revealed that Spurs are leading the race to acquire the services of the English custodian when his contract with the Baggies runs out at the end of this season.
Johnstone’s Decent Run Of Form In English Football
The Preston-born talent is having a solid campaign at the Hawthorns as he has put in a run of impressive displays in goal for West Brom over the past eight months. Johnstone has conceded 30 goals and earned 14 assists in 34 matches for the Baggies this season on all fronts.
The 29-year-old has done well to average 1.2 clearances and 10.0 long balls per game in the EFL Championship. Johnstone has often gone long with his ball distribution which explains why he has only completed 55.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Johnstone The Right Choice For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte?
Johnstone is a solid handler of the ball and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball to clear the danger when needed. He has decent reflexes that allow him to make a few solid saves at the back. The English goalie has also got a wealth of experience in English football under his belt. However, Johnstone needs to improve his passing accuracy if he intends to become a regular feature in top-flight football next season.
Tottenham need a new keeper as Hugo Lloris is currently enjoying the twilight years of his playing career. Thus, Johnstone fits the bill perfectly as he is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at the North London club in the coming seasons.
At 29, the West Brom keeper is currently playing at his prime and would no doubt enhance the quality of Spurs boss Antonio Conte‘s match-day squad. Thus, Johnstone will be a good choice for Tottenham to consider when he becomes a free agent in the summer. However, only time will tell whether he can help Spurs win some trophies over the next few years.
