In a recent report from Italy, (via The Chronicle) it was revealed that Newcastle United have identified Atalanta forward Duvan Zapata as a target. It is believed that the Magpies could face competition in the form of West Ham United in pursuit of the Colombian talent.
Zapata’s Good Form At The Gewiss Stadium
The 30-year-old is having a decent campaign in Italian football as he has put in some influential displays as the focal point of Atalanta’s attack. Zapata has registered 12 goals and seven assists in 23 matches for the Italian outfit this season across multiple competitions.
The Colombian forward has been a consistent performer in the final third based on his average of 2.9 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in Serie A. He has even been excellent when linking up play in the attacking end of the field, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 80.1% in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
What Will Zapata Add To Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe’s Side?
Zapata can use his quickness to make some decent runs with the ball in the final third. He can get himself into some dangerous areas up top and is a decent finisher in front of the opposition goal. The Colombia international packs a lot of power with his shot attempts and has got a great leap in him that allows him to win his fair share of duels in the air.
A striker of Zapata’s skillset will be a welcome addition to Newcastle‘s squad ahead of the new season. We can expect the Atalanta star to add a lot of pace and power to Eddie Howe‘s frontline. Plus, he will serve as an upgrade over Chris Wood, who has struggled to find consistency with his performances at St. James’ Park over the past few months.
At 30, Zapata is still playing at his prime and has got a few good years left in him to play at a high level which makes him a good option for the Tyneside outfit this summer. Thus, the Magpies should prioritize on getting a deal done for the Colombian powerhouse when the transfer window resumes later this summer.
