Antonio Conte is desperately searching a backup for his back three- Azpilicueta, Luiz and Cahill, who have started in all the last 10 games now. While the Blues are on a 10-match winning streak, the Italian boss knows the importance of keeping his defenders fit. But as the number matches increase and cup tournaments start next month, it is quite difficult to start them every time.
As a result, the London club has been linked with many defenders across Europe. Among them, one of the bigger targets was Daniele Rugani of Juventus. Conte has been an admirer of the 22-year-old and wanted to bring him to Stamford Bridge, but the player has reportedly signed a contract extension with Juventus that will keep him till 2021.
Juventus announced the completion of a new deal for Rugani on their official site and social media channels, with a statement that shows how important they feel the player will be for the future.
The young defender, who has been a regular for Italy from U-17s, made his top-flight debut this November. He could have definitely been a big addition to the Chelsea squad, but there are many other options available for Conte. T4O looks at 3 potential options Chelsea could consider signing after missing out on Rugani.
Antonio Rudiger- The Blues have been linked with this German beast of a defender for long and he has even recently refused to rule out a move to Stamford Bridge. Very much like David Luiz, the 190 cms tall defender also has a decent pace to trace back, which could be immensely useful for any club.
He has already bagged 4 caps for the national team. Still very young, Rudiger’s aggression and strength in the air make him a serious threat from indirect set pieces. In some ways, he is better than Rugani and his young age gives a window for improvement.
Virgil van Dijk- He has been a hot prospect for many big clubs across Europe. Chelsea have to fight the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United if they want to land him. The Dutch enforcer is yet another candidate, who is great in the air and his game reading abilities are near perfection.
At 193cms, this Southampton defender could also be a brilliant alternative because unlike the other players, he has enough Premier League experience.
Jamaal Lascelles- He could one for the future and perhaps the most suitable candidate because he might be ready to wait for his turn on the bench. He currently plays at Championship side Newcastle United and the 23-year-old has been an inspiring skipper for his side.
His leadership qualities despite his young age make him an interesting option at the centre-back position. His timely tackles and interceptions have been a major reason for Newcastle staying at the Championship summit this season.
