In a recent report, Sport mentioned that Aston Villa would have to pay £21m to recruit Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum this summer. It is understood that the Villans are showing interest in acquiring the Dutch midfield ace’s services at the end of this season.
Wijnaldum’s Unimpressive Spell At Parc des Princes Thus Far
Wijnaldum has found regular playing minutes hard to come by at the French capital as he has often found himself on PSG’s midfield. The 31-year-old has banged in three goals and grabbed two assists in 29 matches for the French outfit this season across all fronts.
The Rotterdam-born talent has struggled to find consistency with his performances in French football based on his average of 0.9 shots, 0.3 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. However, he has been tidy when distributing possession from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 90.5% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Wijnaldum A Good Choice For Aston Villa Head Coach Steven Gerrard?
Wijnaldum can do a bit of everything at the centre of the park when he is playing with confidence on the field. He is a neat passer of the ball and can create some inviting chances for others around him in the attacking third of the pitch.
The veteran midfield ace has got a wealth of experience under his belt and can still make some intelligent runs with the ball towards the opponent’s penalty box.
We can expect Wijnaldum to inject more quality into Steven Gerrard‘s midfield. The Dutch midfielder has failed to give a good account of himself in French football, so it makes sense for the player to seek a move back to England in search of more game time in the coming seasons.
At 31, Wijnaldum has still got a few good years left in him to play at the highest level. Hence, the Villans should consider going all out to land the Netherlands international in the summer. With all things considered, the PSG outcast will be a decent choice for the West Midlands club as long as Gerrard manages to get the best out of him at Villa Park over the next couple of years.
