Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to blame Loris Karius for Liverpool’s recent defensive setbacks. Karius has been poor in his last two outings.
After a difficult match against Bournemouth where Nathan Ake scored from his blunder, he was again in the midst of criticism for his performance against West Ham United. He failed to judge Dimitri Payet’s free kick as the French man scored the equaliser after Liverpool took the lead through Adam Lallana.
He was also at fault for West Ham’s second goal as he appeared to be in the wrong position at the time of the goal. Defending his keeper the German gaffer said that the defending needs to be better and only then it will help his keeping.
“Of course when you concede goals there is a discussion here, a discussion there. We discuss it ourselves. We analyse.
“We are much less personal. We won’t say, ‘Are you crazy? What did you do in this situation?’ OK, we had the situation at Bournemouth. That was bad defending. People said, ‘If we had Matip’. OK, so Matip would have been able to run all around for that fourth goal? It was a general feeling. We didn’t feel comfortable. We didn’t push up. But it only helps if we all do better.”
He further added, “The defending begins by putting pressure on the player who passed the ball or we should have more players behind the ball.”
