In a recent report, Belgian news outlet Voetbal Nieuws stated that Everton are showing interest in Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez. It has been mentioned that the Toffees will have to rival Southampton in the race to land the Spanish defender in the summer.
Gomez’s Excellent Form At Anderlecht This Season
Gomez is having an incredible campaign in Belgian football after producing several impressive performances on the left side of Anderlecht’s defence. The 21-year-old has scored six goals and secured 13 assists in 35 appearances for the Belgian outfit this season across various competitions.
The Badalona-born talent has influenced the game at both ends of the field as he is averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.2 shots, 1.8 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in the Jupiler Pro League. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball in the final third after completing 84.4% of his attempted passes in the Belgian top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Everton Boss Frank Lampard Bring Gomez To Merseyside?
Gomez has been a positive influence for Anderlecht in both halves this season. He is a decent defender at the back and can make some driving runs with the ball down the left flank. The Spanish talent can create a few inviting openings for others around him and can even chip in by netting some important goals for his side in the final third.
An attack-minded left-back of Gomez’ skillset will be a great signing for the Toffees following the departure of Lucas Digne last January. The Spanish full-back could serve as an ideal successor to the Frenchman at Goodison Park.
At 21, Gomez has got a very bright future ahead of him, so it makes sense for Frank Lampard to engineer a move to bring the Jupiler Pro League star to the blue half of Merseyside during the summer transfer window. He has what it takes to help Everton compete for European football in the coming seasons.
However, there are some question marks over whether Gomez would be able to cope with the physical nature of English football. Either way, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting him which makes him a good target for Everton to consider this summer.
