Eric Dier made his amazing transformation from a starlet to a star last season after Mauricio Pochettino introduced him to a defensive midfield role. He is naturally a centre-back who could also play as a right-back but was one of the standout players in the Premier League last season in defensive midfield. But, the 22-year-old is worried that his prospects with the England national team could be damaged by his reduced role under Mauricio Pochettino as per recent reports.
Dier has started 11 of Tottenham’s 15 Premier League games this season but has been used as a central defender in Toby Alderweireld’s absence with an injury. With Pochettino now opting for a midfield pairing of Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, Dier’s place in England’s side could not be under threat if he fails to get regular playing time in his preferred position.
If Pochettino cannot offer Dier playing time in near future, Spurs might have to lose the young Englishman’s services and he will not find it hard to attract suitors. Here are three potential destinations for the 22-year-old.
Everton
Gareth Barry is at the dusk of his career right now and this could be his final year at Goodison Park. On the other hand, James McCarthy has clearly failed to convince the manager Ronald Koeman and despite playing against Arsenal last night, his future is in doubt.
Everton badly need a solid partner for Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park and Dier could be the perfect option. The 22-year-old is defensively solid and has the ability to pick out passes. Everton could offer him playing time week in week out and that is his prime concern. Wages won’t be a problem either as the blue half of Merseyside now have the backing of Farhad Moshiri. So, a move makes sense.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich’s interest in Dier is pretty well-known. The Bundesliga giants have been monitoring the English international since last season and if Spurs cannot offer him playing time on a regular basis, Bayern can take advantage of that. Dier could be a long-term replacement for the legendary Xabi Alonso who is 35 now. Although Dier doesn’t have the same range of distribution as the Spanish pass master, he will add other attributes to the midfield and could become indispensable to the Bayern team.
Chelsea
Dier’s discontent at White Hart Lane has reportedly alerted Chelsea. Dier’s versatility of being capable of playing as a central defender, right back and of course defensive midfielder will intrigue any manager in the world. He is a ball-playing defender and would be an excellent fit in Conte’s 3 at the back system. On top of that, Dier is just 22 years of age and can grow into a superb player in future.
