In a recent interview with Football Insider, former West Ham United player Frank McAvennie was full of praise for Newcastle United full-back Kieran Trippier. McAvennie said,
“I always said Trippier would be their best signing.
“He’s come straight in and made that place his own and he’s probably their best player.
“For him to get that goal last night is brilliant. He raises the standards of everyone around him.
“I bet some of those players look around and they can’t believe Trippier is there.
“Every part of his game is brilliant, his defending, his attacking. His crossing is pinpoint.
“The Newcastle fans love him already and it’s easy to see why. He’s going to be a hero for them there, what a signing.
“He’s the one who will lead them when they challenge for trophies. The way they are going it could be two or three years away.”
Trippier’s Excellent Spell At Tyneside Thus Far
Trippier has made a good start to life at St. James’ Park since sealing a move from Atletico Madrid during the January transfer window. The England international has already scored one goal in four appearances for the Magpies so far on all fronts.
The 31-year-old has given a good account of himself by averaging 4.3 tackles, 2.7 interceptions, 2.0 clearances, 3.3 crosses and 2.0 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he has been a bit untidy with his ball distribution after making 64.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Will Trippier Keep His Good Form Going At Newcastle United?
Trippier has transformed himself into a solid defender at the back during his time at Atletico Madrid. Hence, it is no surprise that he has made such a dominant start to life as Newcastle‘s first-choice right-back. The English sensation can time his tackles well to earn possession back for his team. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and is an excellent crosser of the ball as well.
His creativity and defensive prowess could give the Magpies an edge in the race to get out of the Premier League’s relegation zone this season.
There is no reason why Trippier cannot keep his good form going on the right hand of Eddie Howe‘s defence over the next few months. With some exciting matches coming up against Aston Villa, West Ham United and Brentford this month, the 35-time England international will have plenty of opportunities to prove his worth and become a real star at St. James’ Park.
