In a recent report, The Daily Star revealed that Manchester City could entertain offers for Raheem Sterling in the summer if the player decides not to renew his contract. It has been claimed that the Mancunian outfit are open to welcoming offers for the England international at the end of this campaign as he has got less than 18 months left to run in his current deal at the Etihad Stadium.
Sterling’s Diminishing Influence At Manchester This Season
Sterling is having a decent season in English football as he has been responsible for putting in a few match-winning displays as a key member of Pep Guardiola’s attack. However, he has also been left out of the first-team in some of Man City’s most high-profile games this season which has put his long-term future in doubt.
The England international has netted nine goals and grabbed three assists in 27 matches for the Mancunian club during this campaign in all competitions. Sterling has performed well to average 1.9 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball in the final third after making 86.6% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Cash In On Sterling?
Sterling can use his pace to get to the byline with ease and can often leave his marker to bite the dust out on the wide areas. He has a low centre of gravity and usually earns a lot of penalties because of his clever movement and trickery with the ball at his feet.
The 72-time England international is currently playing at his prime and remains an important member of Pep Guardiola‘s first XI.
However, Sterling’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2023 which means that Man City would have no choice but to cash in on him at the end of this campaign unless they can tie the player down to a new deal.
Still, Guardiola would be wise to try everything he can to keep the English winger at the Mancunian club as he will be a difficult talent to replace in the summer. Sterling has already proven his worth in Premier League football and knows what it takes to win trophies with Man City in domestic football. Hence, the Premier League leaders would be better off retaining his services for the long run.
