According to a report by Christian Falk, Newcastle United have expressed their interest to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the upcoming days of the January transfer window. It is believed that the Premier League outfit are looking at options in the transfer market to bring in a goalkeeper after the recent uncertainty over the future of Freddie Woodman. The German goalkeeper is also believed to be keen on a move to St. James Park after falling behind in the pecking order at Arsenal. Eddie Howe is looking to add to his goalkeeping department in order to provide competition to Martin Dubravka between the sticks after not being happy with the other backup goalkeepers.
Bernd Leno Not A First-Choice At Arsenal
The German goalkeeper has been a first-choice between the sticks at Arsenal since joining them in 2018. But the tables have turned this season upon the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale whose superb performances have kept Leno out of the starting XI for months now. The 29-year-old has only started 3 Premier League games this season and a few other cup games which have left him frustrated after the halfway point in the season.
Bernd Leno’s lack of gametime has urged him to look at options outside Arsenal in order to redeem himself and show his true form again. With his contract expiring in about 18 months it is believed that the German is unlikely to cost a fortune and hence a move to Magpies might actually happen.
Right Choice For Eddie Howe?
Bernd Leno is a reliable shot-stopper with loads of experience at the highest level of football. He has made a combined total of 333 appearances in the Premier League and the Bundesliga establishing himself as a top goalkeeper in both leagues. His experience, along with his quality, is going to come in handy for Eddie Howe in the future with the English manager looking to rebuild his squad in the summer.
It is believed that the German won’t be an expensive signing and that just might tempt Newcastle to launch a bid in the next few remaining days in the transfer window. The Gunners will be hoping to cash in on the goalkeeper if at all he has made up his mind to leave the club in January.
