In a recent report, Voetbal International revealed that Liverpool are set to rival Manchester City for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo. It is understood that both the Reds and Man City have held talks with the Dutch wide player over a potential move in the future.
Gakpo’s Excellent Run Of Form In Dutch Football This Season
Gakpo has enjoyed the best form of his young career in the Dutch Eredivisie during this campaign as he has been responsible for putting in several match-winning performances on the left side of PSV’s attack. The 22-year-old has banged in ten goals and grabbed 11 assists in 28 appearances for the Dutch outfit this season on all fronts.
The Eindhoven-born playmaker has given a good account of himself by averaging 3.2 shots, 2.8 key passes, 2.1 crosses and 2.6 dribbles per game in the Eredivisie. He has even distributed the ball well in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 76.8% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Gakpo A Good Option For Liverpool?
Gakpo can use his pace and agility to cause a lot of problems for the opposition defenders. He can often turn on the afterburners to get to the byline and can deliver some dangerous crosses into the opponent’s penalty box.
The four-time Netherlands international has got the vision to pick out a killer pass in the attacking end of the pitch and has done well to develop himself into a prolific goal-scorer in Dutch football. There is no denying that the future is quite bright for Gakpo, so Liverpool would be wise to orchestrate a move to bring him to the northwest of England this month or at the end of this campaign.
We can expect the PSV star to offer some decent cover for the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah at Anfield in the coming seasons. He could even serve as a decent replacement for Divock Origi, who is entering the final few months of his Liverpool contract.
Gakpo could bring even more goals and creativity to Jurgen Klopp‘s attack which makes him a good option for the Reds to pursue in the future.
