Just when it was being thought that Liverpool could end their 27-year wait for the Premier League title this season, a mini-slump has hit the Reds of late. It started with a collapse against Bournemouth where Klopp’s men surrendered a 1-3 lead in the 76th minute to lose the game 4-3. A 2-2 draw against West Ham United added further concerns to the fans and probably Jürgen Klopp too. Can we expect a busy January transfer window? Of course, we can!
Sassuolo hitman Gregoire Defrel is a man in demand with the transfer window approaching in almost a fortnight and the latest name in the lengthy list of his suitors is Liverpool if reports from The Mirror are to be believed. Jürgen Klopp is interested in boosting his attacking options and Defrel is a player who has made it to the shortlist. In fact, the striker has alerted a host of Premier League clubs.
You might not hear too much fuss about the in-form Sassuolo forward but he is definitely a very capable player. Even though he is from France, he’s been playing for most of his career in Italy. Right now at Sassuolo, he was formerly at Parma, Foggia and Cesena. Sassuolo recorded their best ever Serie A finish last season ahead of the likes of AC Milan and Lazio and the Frenchman was the architect behind it.
Defrel has continued his excellent form this season too having scored 10 goals from 23 games in all competitions, also setting up four for his teammates. The 25-year-old is not an out and out number nine but more of a withdrawn forward. However, he is well capable of leading the line on his own. Klopp will love the fact that Defrel is also capable of plying his trade on the flanks as his system is more of a fluid one.
Defrel is an excellent dribbler of the ball and has the pace to outrun most defenders in the world. He is 5’11” and is not the best in the air which won’t be much needed at Liverpool anyway. The Frenchman’s flair and directness make him a welcome addition at Liverpool. Defrel would be a perfect fit in Klopp’s system that is based on dynamism, pressing and hard work.
With Daniel Sturridge struggling with injury as usual and Danny Ings again out for the season, Liverpool just have Divock Origi as the only natural centre-forward and should go for an insurance and Defrel would be much more than that. This could be a hell of a deal from Liverpool.
