Manchester City faced off against Southampton at the St. Mary’s Stadium earlier this evening as they hoped to secure all three points on the road. Man City made a sloppy start to the game as they conceded the opening goal in the seventh minute when Kyle Walker-Peters scored with a poked finish. Pep Guardiola’s men failed to come up with an immediate response and went into the half-time break 1-0 down on the scoreline.
Aymeric Laporte equalised for Man City in the 65th minute with a good header from close range. However, the Premier League leaders failed to net the winner as the match finished 1-1 with both sides sharing the spoils.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player performed during the match against the Saints.
GK: Ederson – 6/10
The Brazilian keeper made a couple of decent saves during the game but couldn’t do much about Walker-Peters’ finish in the seventh minute.
RB: Kyle Walker – 6.5/10
He was solid when defending at the back and made one key chance in the final third.
CB: Ruben Dias – 6.5/10
Dias did enough work defensively to keep Armando Broja quiet during the 90 minutes. However, he will be disappointed for not keeping a clean sheet.
CB: Aymeric Laporte – 8/10
He won a lot of aerial duels and was a rock at the back. Laporte scored Man City’s all-important equaliser with a solid header.
LB: Joao Cancelo – 7/10
Cancelo performed his defensive duties well and was a real threat going forward. He made a few clever runs with the ball and engineered a couple of decent chances in the final third.
CM: Bernardo Silva – 7.5/10
The Portuguese talent created plenty of inviting chances for others around him and completed a few dangerous dribbles in the Southampton half.
CM: Rodri – 7.5/10
He anchored the midfield with conviction and was unfortunate to hit the crossbar.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – 8/10
De Bruyne caused all sorts of problems for the opposition defenders and picked up a good assist for setting up Laporte’s equaliser from his freekick.
RW: Raheem Sterling – 6/10
He had a couple of bright moments in the game but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
ST: Jack Grealish – 6.5/10
Grealish got himself into some dangerous areas inside the Southampton penalty box but failed to find the back of the net.
LW: Phil Foden – 7/10
He made two good opportunities for his teammates to score and got himself to the byline quite well. However, there was no goal for him this evening.
Substitutes:
ST: Gabriel Jesus – 6.5/10
The Brazilian striker could only hit the post with his header from close range.
