In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Cristiano Ronaldo has offered his thoughts on Manchester United’s recent struggles and has admitted that the team is not where it should be.
Manchester United’s recent run of performances have put them in grave danger of potentially missing out on a top-four finish in the Premier League this season. Having dropped points in two of the last three league matches, the Red Devils are currently dawdling in the seventh position in the league table, six points adrift of the Champions League places.
“I don’t accept that our mentality be less than being in the top three in the Premier League. I think to build up good things, sometimes you have to destroy a few things. So why not – new year, new life and I hope that Manchester (United) can be the level that the fans want. They deserve that.”, said Ronaldo.
With eight goals in 16 Premier League matches, the Portuguese international has been the club’s top scorer this season. However, the club’s recent struggles have led to speculation over his long-term future at Old Trafford, with Premier League pundit Gabby Agbonlahor notably urging United get rid of the Portuguese icon in the summer.
“I don’t want to be here in the club to fight to be in sixth or seventh place. I am here to try to win, to compete. I believe if we change our mind we can achieve big things.”, Ronaldo added, before going on to defend coach Ralf Rangnick.
“He arrived here five weeks ago. He changed many things but he needs time to put his ideas through the players and on the pitch. It takes time but I believe that he is going to do a good job. We know we don’t play the best football, as we should do, but we have many games to improve. Since he arrived I think in some points we are better, but he needs time.”, said the 36-year-old.
Rangnick has been under the microscope lately, especially after the defeat to Wolves. He recently faced criticism from club legend Paul Scholes, who questioned his credibility and track record prior to his move to Old Trafford.
It now remains to be seen whether the German tactician will be able to turn things around. After a recent win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup, his Manchester United side will be in action on Saturday when they take on the same opposition in the Premier League.
