Denmark’s legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has urged Manchester United to sign Dimitri Payet in the January transfer window, although the playmaker will reportedly be available for £15million should West Ham be relegated. The Hammers are in absolute shambles, languishing just a point above the relegation zone in 17th.
They have been able to take just 13 points from their 15 games. The London club has already lost 8 games and has performed woefully in their defence conceding 31 goals, just one less than the team with the worst defensive record in the division in Hull City.
The attacking section hasn’t done any good either for the Hammers, with just 17 goals scored in the league. Manchester United too have struggled for goals under Jose Mourinho despite dominating most games they have played this season – leaving them a disappointing sixth in the Premier League table heading into the festive period.
Payet has only scored two league goals this term for West Ham, following his impressive debut campaign, but the France international has created more chances in 2016 for his team-mates than any other rival. While on the pitch, he remains to be the standout player for his squad but the inefficiencies of his teammates have resulted in wastage of all the good work done by the attacker.
With United are ready to bolster their squad in January, and Schmeichel believes that the former Marseille man would be the perfect addition at Old Trafford. The former United goalie, when asked about Payet, remarked, “He’s a Manchester United-type player, for sure, I think Mourinho has to change his way a little bit to please the fans, the club and the traditions of the club. I think he is showing signs of that, the players that he is signing, they are of a different calibre. Zlatan Ibrahimović is someone he probably wouldn’t have signed had he been at Chelsea, but he’s United’s kind of player, the kind the supporters like to see. He’s rewarding us with great skills and great goals – I think he has scored seven goals so far. But Payet? Definitely if he can find the form he showed during the Euros.”
Payet, who earned a reputation in the French League performing brilliantly for the likes of Saint-Etienne, Lille and Marseille joined West Ham for an absolute bargain of £10.7m.
His displays of last season made him a contender for the signing of the season. A player at the peak of his powers, performing at both the club and international level with a proven record in the Premier league will be a great addition to any club let alone Manchester United.
