In a recent report by the Telegraph, Newcastle United lead the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon on a loan in the upcoming transfer window. Watford and Leeds are also interested but it is believed that the Magpies are currently ahead of them and are in pole position to bring in the defender. Joe Rodon has struggled to integrate himself into the plans of new manager Antonio Conte and could be on his way out this January in search of regular minutes of football. Rodon is highly rated in the market and has no short of clubs wanting to get his services.
Joe Rodon Not In Conte’s Plans
Joe Rodon arrived in Tottenham from Swansea City last year. Last season the young centre-back made 12 appearances including 8 starts in the league but has failed to make a single start this season. According to Antonio Conte, he sees Rodon as a backup to his senior centre-back. Joe Rodon is although a key player for his national team Wales and therefore he would like to have more gametime under his belt in order to help his nation qualify for the World Cup in 2022.
It is believed that a loan deal would be the best for both parties as Joe Rodon seeks to get more minutes on the pitch. Conte also believes that a loan deal will help the youngster develop more and compete for a first-team place in the Spurs squad.
Right Choice By Eddie Howe?
Newcastle United sit at 18th place in the Premier League table and has struggled defensively throughout the season. They have conceded 41 goals this season in 18 games and it is not a shocker that Eddie Howe is considering Joe Rodon to improve on his defensive options. Joe Rodon has impressed in his first season at Spurs in the league and is now considering a move to the Magpies in search of regular minutes.
Rodon is a disciplined defender and has a great positioning sense as shown by him last season. He isn’t great in the air but has a great recovery pace to cover spaces in behind. He is good at tackling and there is no doubt that he will improve the Magpies defence. His national team manager would also like him to move in order to keep improving and help Wales qualify for the World Cup in 2022. Now it remains to be seen if Newcastle United can win the race with the other clubs to get his services.
