In a recent report by the Calciomercato, Aston Villa have made an offer to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. Steven Gerrard is reportedly interested in signing the Liverpool ace to improve his defensive options at Aston Villa. It is believed that Liverpool are reluctant to let the defender leave as Jurgen Klopp still considers him an important player in the team. The main headache for Klopp this season has been giving enough minutes to his defenders after a difficult last season when Liverpool missed most of their key defenders for the majority of the season. The arrival of Ibrahim Konate in the summer has also added competition to Gomez to earn a starting place as his battle with injuries also continues.
Joe Gomez’s Lack Of Gametime At Liverpool
Joe Gomez is at the club since 2015 and has grown his stature under Jurgen Klopp throughout these years. Gomez played a key role in Liverpool’s 2019-20 league winning season which saw him cement his place in the starting XI. But injuries have not been kind to him as he has suffered multiple long-term injuries with the Reds. He suffered a knee injury in his England duties which ruled him out for the entirety of last season and also a place in the national team for the Euro 2020 and since then he has found it difficult to crack into the Liverpool first team ahead of the likes Virgil Van Djik, Joel Matip and new arrival Ibrahim Konate.
Gomez is yet to make a Premier League start this season with his limited appearances coming in the Champions League and EFL Cup. While he has been considered as an important part of the squad, Klopp has struggled to integrate him into the first XI which has allowed other clubs to show interest in his services.
What Will Joe Gomez Bring To Steven Gerrard’s Team?
It is believed that Villa’s new boss Steven Gerrard is looking to improve his defensive options in the upcoming transfer window. Although Gerrard is quite happy with his first choice centre-backs Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings, the likes of Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe have failed to catch the eye of the manager. A defender of Joe Gomez’s calibre and experience will no doubt be a great addition to the Villa squad.
Gomez has his rare set of qualities as he is extremely good at reading the game and taking vital positions on the field to stop the opponent’s attack. His main strength is his recovery pace as he is really fast to cover spaces in behind. Gomez is also good in the air and can play out from the back. All these qualities will help Steven Gerrard compete with the top 6 clubs in the league. Now it remains to be seen if Liverpool do let him go in the upcoming future.
