In a recent report by the Fichajes, the Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso is linked with a move away from the Blues with Napoli setting their sights on a potential transfer. Marcos Alonso is keen on leaving at the end of the season as he looks to move away for regular gametime in order to crack a place in the Spanish side for the 2022 World Cup. Alonso’s contract will end in the summer of 2023 and next summer he will enter the last year of his contract at Chelsea. With Ben Chilwell establishing himself as the first-choice left-back, Chelsea will be looking to cash in on the Spaniard next summer.
Marcos Alonso Not A Regular At Chelsea
Marcos Alonso joined Chelsea in 2016 and has been a key player for the Blues in winning the Premier League in his debut season. But since 2018, after the departure of Antonio Conte, the Spanish International’s importance in the squad somewhat reduced. The arrival of Ben Chilwell was another blow to Alonso’s Chelsea career as the English full-back cemented his place in the starting XI under Thomas Tuchel. But Chilwell’s recent injury concern has given another opportunity to Alonso to impress his manager and get back the starting spot in the lineup.
It is believed that Alonso would demand regular gametime at Chelsea in order to crack a place in the Spanish squad for the World Cup 2022 but Chilwell’s comeback might again hamper his chances to play regularly. With his contract coming to an end in 2023, Chelsea would also like to agree to the Spaniard’s request of letting him go in the summer.
Can Chelsea Afford To Lose The Spaniard?
Marcos Alonso started the season as a first-choice left-back for Thomas Tuchel but had to make his way for Ben Chilwell as he started 6 games in a row before getting injured. If Chelsea are considering selling Alonso in the next summer it is for certain that they have to dig into the transfer market for defensive recruitments. The Spaniard is already in his 30s and is finding it difficult to keep up with the pace of the Premier League and it is believed that a younger player will be an ideal choice for the Blues.
Alonso has been excellent going forward but the main concern has always been his defensive duties which Chelsea will want to improve upon. The Spaniard is looking for a club where he can get regular gametime for his preparations for the World Cup and it remains to be seen if Napoli can offer him what he wants.
