Joel Matip won’t be leaving in January for AFCON to play for Cameroon, the defender himself has confirmed.
Matip who joined Liverpool in January on a free transfer from hasn’t featured for his country since 2015. He has 27 caps for the country of his father’s birth. In September, Cameroon boss Hugo Broos had said that he was very disappointed with the 25-year-old after he turned down the chance to appear for the country.
Bournemouth recently exposed the weakness of the Reds defence as they came from behind to defeat them 4-3 to hand them their first defeat after an unbeaten stretch of 15 matches. Liverpool have conceded nine goals in three matches in the absence of the lanky defender this season.
Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League and has a very good chance to clinch their 19 the Premier League title. Matip insisted that he rather would love to help Liverpool to their first League triumph in recent years.
“It’s not an easy decision but I want to concentrate on Liverpool. I want to be [here].
“I want to focus on Liverpool and that’s what I had to decide. I think I took the right decision.”
