According to El Nacional, Tottenham Hotspur have been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Luka Modric. The Real Madrid playmaker faces an uncertain future at the club, with his current contract expiring at the end of the season. While Modric is open to offers from elsewhere, he has already rejected an opportunity to rejoin Tottenham next season.
Luka Modric: One Of The Best Midfielders In The Past Decade?
Formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, Luka Modric has been an absolute superstar in European football ever since his 2012 move to Real Madrid. The midfielder has won almost everything, while establishing himself as one of the best midfielders of the past decade in the process, even winning the Ballon d’Or in 2018.
With over 400 competitive appearances for Real Madrid, Modric has indeed been indispensable to the club’s midfield department. Thanks to his contributions in the middle of the park, the club has won four Champions League titles, two La Liga titles and one Copa Del Rey. His performances have not only been restricted at the club level either, with the veteran notably leading his country Croatia to the FIFA World Cup final in 2018.
Throughout the past nine years at Real Madrid, Modric has built a name for himself with his technical prowess, leadership and ability to create chances. His partnership with Toni Kroos and Casemiro is one of the best in the world, while in recent years, the player has continued to play week in week out, despite being 36, which is indicative of his athleticism.
A Massive Blow For Tottenham?
Luka Modric denying the opportunity to return to Tottenham Hotspur serves as a major blow for the club. Following the recent exits of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, coupled with the expected departure of Hugo Lloris next summer, the club truly requires a real leader who can help the team embark on a new era under Antonio Conte.
Modric might have been the ideal man due to his pedigree at the highest level of football, combined with the winning mentality he offers to the table. With 160 competitive appearances for Tottenham, the Croatian has experience in English football as well and shouldn’t have taken much time settling into the Premier League.
In addition to that, Modric would have been available for a free transfer at the end of the season, making him the perfect investment for the North London giants. However, with the veteran midfielder not too keen on a reunion, it is time for Tottenham to set their sights on other alternatives.
