Newcastle United entertained Brentford at St. James’ Park earlier today as they looked to pick up their first victory of this Premier League season. The Magpies made a good start to the game as they scored the opening goal in the tenth minute via Jamaal Lascelles’ brilliant header. However, Ivan Toney equalised for the visitors just one minute later due to some poor goalkeeping from Karl Darlow. Rico Henry completed the turnaround for the Bees as he scored in the 31st minute before Joelinton managed to make things level on the scoreline again just eight minutes later. Both sides went into the half-time break with a 2-2 scoreline.
The Magpies made a poor start to the second half and conceded their third goal in the 61st minute when Jamaal Lascelles scored an unfortunate own goal. However, the home side found the leveler in the 75th minute courtesy of an excellent volley from Allan Saint-Maximin. The contest ended 3-3 with the Tyneside giants failing to pick up maximum points in front of their home supporters.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the clash against the Bees.
GK: Karl Darlow – 4.5/10
The Magpies keeper pulled off a couple of saves and even made some important clearances. However, he made a poor mistake to let in Brentford’s first goal.
CB: Fabian Schar – 6.5/10
Schar cleared the danger when needed and even created one key chance going forward. Still, he won’t be happy after letting in three goals during his time on the field.
CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 7/10
He made several crucial clearances to come to his team’s rescue. He gave Newcastle the lead with a fantastic header early in the first half but was also guilty of netting an own goal in the 61st minute.
CB: Ciaran Clark – 6/10
Clark was too slow to react at times on the defensive end of the field. However, he was a threat at the other end.
RM: Jacob Murphy – 7/10
Murphy was always eager to make a tackle and even orchestrated two good chances for others around him.
CM: Joe Willock – 6.5/10
The Newcastle midfield made a few crunching tackles and was always looking to create openings for his teammates.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 7/10
Shelvey managed to cook up a lot of good goal-scoring opportunities in the opposition half. He also won the ball back a few times in midfield.
LM: Matt Ritchie – 7/10
He did his fair share of defending and delivered some inviting passes into the Brentford penalty box. Ritchie has got an assist to show for his efforts.
RW: Joelinton – 8.5/10
Joelinton caused all sorts of problems for the opposition with his running and link-up play. He got his name on the scoresheet with a brilliant strike.
ST: Callum Wilson – 6.5/10
The ex-Bournemouth striker was always willing to have a shot but was quite wasteful in front of the opponent’s goal.
LW: Allan Saint-Maximin – 8/10
He scored Newcastle’s third goal with a good volley. Moreover, Saint-Maximin completed multiple eye-catching dribbles down the left wing.
Substitutes:
CM: Sean Longstaff – 6/10
The English midfield ace added some energy to Newcastle’s midfield.
LW: Ryan Fraser – 7.5/10
