In a recent report by the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are targeting Liverpool’s Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara to bolster their midfield options in January. Barcelona will largely be forced to only loan moves for the January transfer window and they have prioritized the Spanish midfielder to be an ideal choice for them. Thiago has spent the initial years of his career at the Catalan giants before joining Bayern Munich in 2013 and hence is considered to know the Barca DNA which new manager Xavi is looking for.
Thiago Not Fulfilling His Hype At Anfield
Thiago Alcantara arrived at Liverpool in 2020 from the German champions Bayern Munich after paying 25 million euros but has not seen his claims fulfilled when he signed for the Reds. Initially, the Spaniard struggled with some injury issues but even after getting fully fit it has been difficult for Thiago to adapt to the Jurgen Klopp style of play. Thiago had to fight for his place in the middle of the park for Liverpool but still hasn’t been able to put a stamp on his position.
With Gini Wijnaldum leaving last summer, Thiago was supposed to be a guaranteed starter but that has not been the likely case till now. The Reds style of play has caused difficulties for Thiago and the pace of the game in the Premier League hasn’t suited his style of play either. Although Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that Thiago Alcantara will fight for his place and stamp his authority in his position through his performances, the same has not happened yet.
Can Liverpool Afford To Lose Thiago?
The Reds are already struggling with injuries in the midfield department this season with the likes of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Harvey Eliott and James Milner all having early setbacks. Having injury-prone players in that department hasn’t helped Klopp either to compete on all fronts with the other aspirants of the Premier League.
With a situation like this already in place, Jurgen Klopp cannot afford to lose another midfielder in the course of this season. Barcelona are already monitoring Thiago’s situation and it is believed that the Catalan giants are keenly interested to bring him back to Camp Nou with Thiago’s previous teammate Xavi at the helm this time. But on the other hand, it is crucial for Liverpool to keep hold of the Spaniard’s services to help them challenge the top clubs in England and Europe this season.
