Tottenham Hotspur Among Clubs Interested In AC Milan Defender: A Massive Coup For Conte?

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham are among the clubs in contention to sign Alessio Romagnoli. The AC Milan defender is facing an uncertain future at San Siro, with his current contract expiring at the end of the season. Milan are actively trying to nail him down to a new contract, but it appears the defender has attracted the interest of Spurs, as well as other European giants like Juventus and Barcelona.

Alessio Romagnoli’s Decline At Milan

Alessio Romagnoli is currently one of the longest-serving players at AC Milan, having joined the club back in 2015. During his ongoing six-year spell at San Siro, he has notched up a total of 232 competitive appearances.

Romagnoli’s leadership qualities, coupled with his vast experience at the highest level of football earned him the role of club captain for the past few years. However, under the leadership of Stefano Pioli, the centre-back has lost his importance in the team, particularly due to the emergence of a certain Simon Kjaer.

In addition to the Danish international, Milan have had success with their other defensive options including summer signing Fikayo Tomori, while the likes of Pierre Kalulu and Davide Calabria have provided excellent service.

It has contributed to Romagnoli’s slow decline in Milan. However, that hasn’t deterred suitors from eyeing an opportunity to snap up the Italian international next season, as they all value the leadership, aggression and work ethic he brings to the table.

Is He A Good Option For Tottenham?

The addition of Alessio Romagnoli could be an interesting move by Tottenham Hotspur. The club does not lack depth in the central defensive unit, boasting the services of players like Cristiano Romero, Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon.

However, Dier and Sanchez have both struggled with a lack of consistency and are not favoured by the newly-appointed Antonio Conte. Rodon and Tanganga, meanwhile, are still young and have a long way to go before they can prove themselves at the highest level of football.

That is where the acquisition of Romagnoli could make sense. The Italian international can fill the leadership void left behind by Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, while his robust style of play should combine well with the technically astute nature of Romero.

It could ultimately add another dimension to Tottenham’s defensive setup. And with Romagnoli potentially being available as a free agent next summer, he could indeed be a massive coup for the Lilywhites.
