Manchester United bounced back from their Liverpool humiliation and scripted a commanding 3-0 win on the road against Tottenham Hotspur. But the Red Devils had a sterner test this afternoon as they hosted mighty Manchester City at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjær had an upper hand in the Manchester derby, but the high-flying Citizens crashed his confidence with a thumping 2-0 victory. The Norwegian had his job on the line prior to the contest and might finally suffer the consequences during the international break.
Below are the Manchester United players rated in their dismal defeat against Manchester City.
David de Gea: 7
The scoreline would have been worse had he not pulled off some astounding saves during the first half. All his efforts went in vain when he conceded a sloppy goal moments before the break.
Eric Bailly: 5
Scored a shocking own goal in the early minutes as he failed to deal with Joao Cancelo’s cross. Got outpaced by Phil Foden time and again, struggled to block frequent crosses and, therefore, was taken off at the break to be replaced by Jadon Sancho.
Victor Lindelof: 6
Almost put it into the back of his own net but was relieved by De Gea’s spontaneous save. Although he made some recoveries and no-nonsense clearances, the lack of composure at the back cost them all throughout the contest.
Harry Maguire: 5.5
Had a header off target early into the game, but the skipper was disappointing once again in terms of positioning and wrong offside traps. Tried to carry the ball forward occasionally before losing possession in the middle of the park.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 5
An underwhelming afternoon for the youngster who failed to match Phil Foden’s pace and prowess down the wide. Could not prevent the crosses and cut insides, also offered little in the attacking third.
Scott McTominay: 6
Could not dominate the midfield game in terms of space or possession. City were ruthless with their slick passing movements, one-twos and link-up football. Tried his best to protect the backline from further misery.
Fred: 6
Lost the majority of duels in the centre of the pitch and was found chasing the ball all afternoon. Made some recoveries and played a few decent long balls to create opportunities against the run of play. Made way for Donny van de Beek with 10 minutes remaining.
Luke Shaw: 5.5
Should have done a lot better defensively when the likes of Kyle Walker, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne were cutting inside and doing layoffs using the width of the pitch. A head injury forced him to leave the pitch midway through the second half. Alex Telles replaced him down the left-hand flank.
Bruno Fernandes: 6.5
Hardly had any impact high up the pitch. Earned a few fouls and made some timely tackles in order to break the Citizens’ momentum and initiate counter-attacking threats.
Mason Greenwood: 6
Missed a decent goal-scoring opportunity. Failed to test Ederson in goal and was taken off for Marcus Rashford around the 67th-minute mark.
Cristiano Ronaldo: 6
Had a sharp effort denied by Ederson in City goal. Didn’t have many touches otherwise and his passing and link-up play let him down big time.
Manchester United Subs Vs Manchester City
Jadon Sancho: 5.5
Nothing significant from the youngster except for a few dribbles from the flank.
Marcus Rashford: 6
Did not see the ball enough since coming on to replace Greenwood.
Alex Telles: 6.5
Whipped in a couple of crosses since replacing injured Luke Shaw.
Donny van de Beek: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
