Tottenham Hotspur Eyeing January Swoop For Juventus Star: Can He Solve Nuno’s Midfield Problems?

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham are eyeing a move for Weston McKennie. The Juventus star has been identified as a potential January target as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to strengthen his midfield options. McKennie is likely to leave Turin as well, with the American international being valued at around €30 million.

McKennie’s Struggles At Juventus

Weston McKennie has endured a difficult time at Juventus since joining the club in the summer of 2020. Initially, the midfielder has performed well during the first half of the 2020/21 campaign, tempting Juve to make his move permanent.

But since then, the youngster has had a tough time establishing himself as one of the first-team regulars for the club. He did make 34 league appearances last term, but only 18 of them were starts. Juventus missing out on the league title for the first time in a decade also didn’t help McKennie’s case, and things seem to have gotten worse under Massimiliano Allegri.

The new coach is favouring the older players like Rodrigo Bentancur, Adrien Rabiot and new signing, Manuel Locatelli. It has led to McKennie being handed just four starts in the new season.

As a result, the American international is now expected to leave Juventus in the upcoming summer transfer window, with Tottenham Hotspur appearing as a potential destination.

How Does McKennie Fit In At Tottenham?

The potential addition of Weston McKennie could be a massive coup for Tottenham Hotspur for multiple reasons. A central midfielder, by trade, the American international should add some much-needed depth in the middle of the park.

Most importantly, his box to box ability coupled with his aggression should help him add some variety in the Tottenham midfield that has lacked creativity as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp are similar players who provide very little going forward.

With Hojbjerg a guaranteed starter, the Dane could form a solid partnership alongside McKennie. The two should offer the ideal balance between attack and defence, ultimately improving the overall quality of the Tottenham Hotspur midfield.

McKennie’s aggression and tenacity are ideally suited to the physical nature of Premier League football. And for a fee of just €30 million, the Juventus midfielder isn’t expected to cost a fortune either, thus making him a potential bargain for the Lilywhites.
