Danny Mills Predicts January Exit For Leeds United Star: Should Bielsa Let Him Go?

During an interview with Football Insider, Danny Mills has backed Tyler Roberts to leave Leeds United in the upcoming January transfer window. The former footballer believes that the Welshman has been very inconsistent in regards to his form and the fact that Marcelo Bielsa might not be a perfect manager for him, suggesting that a January transfer away from Elland Road could be a possibility.

Tyler Roberts’ Struggles At Leeds United

Formerly of West Brom, Tyler Roberts has never really managed to make an impression at Leeds United since joining the club in January 2018, for a fee of just €3 million.

Although the attacking midfielder has featured in 91 competitive games for the club, he has scored only eight goals while providing nine more. Due to his lack of productivity and consistency in the final third, Roberts has often received criticism.

The Welshman has had difficulties finding regular game-time too, though. Throughout the most part of his Leeds career, the former West Brom starlet had played second fiddle to the likes Pablo Hernandez and Mateusz Klich.

Things have only gotten worse since the club’s promotion to the Premier League, with the attacker notably mustering just 14 starts in the English top-flight last season, falling behind Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Rodrigo Moreno in the pecking order.

Does He Have Any Future At The Club?

Tyler Roberts clearly hasn’t been able to live up to his potential since joining Leeds United. As mentioned earlier, the attacker has struggled with game-time, but a deeper issue is his lack of consistency, especially at the highest level of football.

In fact, only three of the Welshman’s 17 goal involvements have come in the Premier League. He is yet to even register a single goal or assist in the new campaign despite featuring in seven league matches so far. It has undoubtedly contributed to the club’s poor start to the campaign.

From a sporting perspective, it is apparent that Roberts doesn’t have much future at the club. The Welshman has struggled to move ahead of Rodrigo, Raphinha or Harrison, in the pecking order, with the further addition of Dan James only lowering his importance in the first team.

A January exit from Elland Road, therefore, might prove to be a beneficial move for both parties involved. Roberts, as Danny Mills pointed out correctly, needs a new challenge and a different manager. From the club’s perspective, his departure at Leeds might pave the way for a new signing to take his place in the team or even the talented Sam Greenwood enjoying a more prominent role in the first team.
