Tottenham Hotspur return to winning ways thanks to a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa this afternoon. It was an improved display from Nuno Espirito Santo’s men who showed impressive defensive resilience as well as sharpness going forward. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored the opener in the first half, and while Spurs did concede a 67th-minute equaliser, an own goal from Matt Targett secured them the vital three points.

Hugo Lloris 7/10

Hugo Lloris couldn’t have anything to save the Ollie Watkins goal. But he did make a few smart saves to keep his team in the contest, even though he wasn’t tested much.

Emerson Royal 8/10

Emerson Royal was immense for Tottenham in the right-back position. He was solid and disciplined, while also providing offensive support whenever it was required. A promising display from the former Barcelona man.

Cristian Romero 8/10

It was a monstrous defensive performance from Cristian Romero, who aided Lloris and Co. whenever it was required. Did have a relatively difficult second half, but it was a polished defensive display from the ex-Juventus starlet.

Eric Dier 7.5/10

Eric Dier was slightly incompetent when dealing with Matt Targett’s cross for Aston Villa’s first goal. However, the Englishman provided good defensive support for Romero to keep Villa out.

Sergio Reguilon 7.5/10

Sergio Reguilon wasn’t as useful going forward. But the most impressive aspect of his performance against Villa was the improvement in the defence. It helped out Spurs keep the opposition at bay for the most part.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 8/10

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had an excellent game in midfield. His aggressive style of play was vital in helping Tottenham get the upper hand in midfield, but most importantly, it was his goal that will certainly impress Nuno.

Oliver Skipp 7/10

Oliver Skipp offered support to Hojbjerg in the middle of the park. He was assured in possession, although Tottenham fans would certainly love a bit more creativity from the youngster.

Lucas Moura 7.5/10

Lucas Moura was not credited with the winner, but his work rate and energy were critical in helping Tottenham have the upper hand in the final third. A pivotal operator in Nuno Espirito Santo’s system.

Tanguy Ndombele 7/10

Tanguy Ndombele put in a hard-working performance in the middle of the park. Had difficulties controlling the midfield, especially when Aston Villa pushed forward but this performance should be enough to help him retain his place in the side.

Son Heung-Min 8.5/10

Son Heung-Min was by far the most effective attacking player for Tottenham. He was immense in the final third, causing all sorts of problems for the Aston Villa defence. Unlucky not to score a goal for himself, but he did play a key role in the lead up to the winner while registering the assist for the Hojbjerg goal.

Harry Kane 6/10

It was yet another stinker for Harry Kane, who continued to struggle in front of goal. On a positive note, though, the Englishman did look much more threatening on and off the ball.

Giovani Lo Celso had an excellent chance to put the game to bed but his attempt on goal was blocked by Tyrone Mings.
