In an official statement, Leeds United have confirmed a new deal for Jack Jenkins. The young midfield prospect has signed a new three-year contract extension at the club. It would keep him at Elland Road until 2024, becoming the latest Leeds United academy player to sign a new deal with the club, following the footsteps of Charlie Cresswell and Liam McCarron.
Who Is Jack Jenkins?
Jack Jenkins is a defensive midfielder by trade, who is making waves in the club’s youth departments. The youngster has already enjoyed swift growth in recent years and is currently a part of Leeds United‘s reserve squad.
He is, in fact, a first-team regular for Mark Jackson’s side that also boasts the services of other talented youngsters like Cresswell, Crysencio Summerville and Joe Gelhardt among many others.
Standing at 1.90m, Jenkins has made an impression in the reserve league with his imposing presence in the middle of the park. His presence in the side often offers the opportunity to the likes of Lewis Bate and Charlie Allen to express themselves in the attacking third, with Jenkins orchestrating things in the middle.
The 19-year-old has already notched up 22 matches in his Premier League 2 career and had notably made his senior debut for Leeds United last season, in the FA Cup defeat to Crawley Town.
Does He Have Any Future At Leeds United?
Leeds United are a bit short-handed in the midfield department at the moment. The failure to sign a new midfielder during the summer transfer window has left the club appear far too overreliant on the services of Kalvin Phillips and Mateusz Klich.
It has reflected poorly on the club’s performances, with the Whites yet to secure a single win in the Premier League this term. It does, however, pave the way for a talented youngster like Jack Jenkins to potentially make an impact.
Although it is hard to imagine the 19 year old making a breakthrough under Marcelo Bielsa this season, it won’t be surprising to see him getting a call-up to the senior side.
The Englishman can ideally serve as a potential alternative for Phillips in the number six role. He can provide the cover for the defence that might be crucial as Leeds United look to pick themselves up after an erratic start to the campaign. The youngster, though, must continue to perform in the reserve team in order to stand a chance of making an impact in the first-team.
