Manchester City will clash heads with Wycombe Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, hoping to secure a victory in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The Citizens will be heading into the contest on the back of a disappointing 0-0 draw against Southampton, whereas the Chairboys recorded a 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in EFL League One last Saturday.
Pep Guardiola will probably opt for the 4-3-3 formation with plenty of tweaks from the last game as several youngsters under the age of 20 seem set to start in midweek.
“I don’t have another alternative,” said the Spanish tactician.
“We are going to play a few young players. Some first-team players, but some players must rest for the three games we have ahead of us.”
“A few players from the academy are going to play because we have John, Ayme (Laporte), Aleks (Zinchenko), Rodri, I think Gundogan, all of them injured.”
4-3-3 Manchester City Predicted Lineup Vs Wycombe Wanderers
Defence
Scott Carson will operate in between the sticks for the upcoming clash. The 36-year-old shot-stopper will be hoping to put up a strong performance and secure a clean sheet on Tuesday.
Josh Wilson-Esbrand might replace Ruben Dias to form the centre-half partnership with Nathan Ake at the heart of City’s backline.
Joao Cancelo will start at the left-back position, whereas Kyle Walker will fill in on the other flank as the right-back. The full-backs will be expected to stay compact and keep their shape defensively.
Midfield
17-year-old Romeo Lavia might start in the holding midfield position and could be assigned with more of a defensive role to shield the home side’s back-four.
Cole Palmer will slot into the central midfield role, whereas Kevin De Bruyne is expected to start in the attacking midfield position. The duo would be determined to set up some clear cut goal scoring chances for the front men.
Bernardo Silva will have to settle for a place on the bench, but he could come on to make a cameo appearance in the second half.
Attack
Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez will take up the wide positions, playing on the left and right-wing, respectively.
Ferran Torres will lead the line for Manchester City against Wycombe Wanderers in midweek. The Spain international will be hoping to get his name on the scoresheet when he faces off against the Wycombe defence that has conceded seven goals in their last three matches across all competitions.
Samuel Edozie will have to settle for a place on the bench, but he could be brought on in the second forty-five minutes.
