Wolverhampton Wanderers clashed heads with Brentford at the Molineux Stadium earlier this afternoon as they looked to secure a positive result at home. Bruno Lage’s men made a sloppy start to the game and conceded a penalty in the 28th minute when Marcal was found guilty of dragging down the opposition.
Ivan Toney converted his penalty and gave the visitors a shock lead before Bryan Mbeumo went on to double their advantage just six minutes later when he found the back of the net from close range. Wolves went into the half-time break two goals down and with a mountain to climb in the second half.
Shandon Baptiste got booked twice and was sent off in the 64th minute but the home side failed to make their numerical advantage count. They continued to be abysmal in the final third as the contest finished with Wolves suffering a disappointing 2-0 loss in front of their home fans.
Let’s take a look at how each Wolves player fared during the clash against Brentford.
GK: Jose Sa – 6/10
The Portuguese keeper made one solid save but couldn’t do much about either of Brentford’s goals today.
CB: Max Kilman – 6/10
Kilman made one important interception during the game and was also good on the ball. However, he won’t be pleased after conceding two goals during the game.
CB: Conor Coady – 6.5/10
The Wolves centre-back got stuck in with some crunching tackles to make life difficult for the opposition. He even made a couple of crucial clearances at the back and was tidy with his passing.
CB: Romain Saïss – 6/10
Saiss was strong in the air but was replaced at the half-time break.
RM: Nelson Semedo – 6/10
He worked his socks off down the right-wing but was lackluster in the final third. He got subbed in the 81st minute.
CM: Ruben Neves – 6.5/10
Neves cleared his lines when needed and engineered two key chances from midfield.
CM: Joao Moutinho – 6/10
The veteran midfielder tried to protect his backline but was too slow to react to the danger in the first half. However, he lacked quality on the ball.
LM: Marcal – 4/10
Marcal gave away a poor penalty when he was found guilty of dragging the opposition down deliberately in the first half. He failed to impress in the Brentford half in what proved to be a frustrating outing for him.
RW: Trincao – 6/10
Trincao’s performance was all flash and no substance today. He had a few lively moments but didn’t do enough to get a goal.
ST: Raul Jimenez – 6.5/10
The Mexican striker did his best to create some decent openings for others around him but wasted a glorious chance to score a goal in the second half.
LW: Adama Traore – 6.5/10
Traore completed plenty of dribbles in the Brentford half but lacked quality with his final delivery.
Substitutes:
ST: Hwang Hee-chan – 6/10
He tried to make things happen but never got a sniff at goal.
ST: Daniel Podence – 6/10
Podence added some energy to Wolves’ attack.
ST: Fabio Silva – N/A
He hardly had any time to make an impact.
