Real Madrid have failed to land Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day but will now focus their attention on signing a pre-contract agreement with the French forward in January so that they can recruit him on a free transfer at the end of this campaign. A recent report from Sky Sports stated that Los Blancos were willing to cough up £197m to acquire the services of the Paris-born talent but never got a response from PSG.
Mbappe’s Excellent Numbers At Parc des Princes Last Season
Mbappe had another outstanding campaign in French football as he continued to be a prolific goal-getter for PSG in the attacking end of the pitch. The former AS Monaco marksman featured in 47 matches for the Parisian giants last season, netting 42 goals and earning 11 assists across all fronts.
The France international was a consistent performer for PSG in French football based on his average of 3.4 shots, 1.1 key passes and 2.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in the 2020-21 Ligue 1 campaign. He was even quite accurate when distributing the ball to his teammates after making 80.7% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Mbappe is a generational talent who could go on to become the best player in world football. Hence, it is no surprise that Los Blancos decided to push so hard for him over the past few months. Now that the Frenchman has just got under a year remaining in his contract at Parc des Princes, Carlo Ancelotti’s side would be in a really good position to snap him up on a free transfer next summer.
Can Los Blancos Cope Without Mbappe This Season?
Mbappe is blessed with electric pace which he can utilize to breeze past his marker in the final third. He has transformed himself into a lethal finisher in front of the opponent’s goal and is versatile enough to operate in any position across the frontline.
The 48-time France international can even chip in by picking up his fair share of assists and is proficient at taking care of the ball when under pressure from the opposition defenders. Mbappe’s pace and goal-threat would have made him a perfect fit for Los Blancos this summer.
At the moment, Ancelotti has still got Karim Benzema serving as his primary centre-forward with Vinicius Junior and Gareth Bale hoping to offer him decent service from the wide areas. Therefore, the Madrid outfit should have no problems coping without Mbappe this season as the likes of Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Rodrygo are great options for Ancelotti to rely on when he needs some firepower off the bench.
