According to Sky Sports, Borussia Dortmund are interested in Callum Hudson-Odoi. The Bundesliga side want to sign a new attacker within the remaining days of the transfer window and are in talks with Chelsea over a potential move. Hudson-Odoi himself is open to joining Dortmund, but the Blues are yet to make a decision on his future.
Callum Hudson-Odoi’s Struggles At Chelsea
Callum Hudson-Odoi is highly regarded as one of Chelsea‘s most gifted footballers, having gained his promotion to the senior side in 2019. Unfortunately, he is yet to make the desired impact in the club’s first-team, failing to impress either Frank Lampard or Thomas Tuchel.
Although the latter does rate him highly, the presence of top-class attackers like Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech have made it difficult for the Englishman to break into the first-team.
Last season, for example, Hudson-Odoi racked 23 Premier League appearances, only ten of which were actual starts. It has raised questions over the winger’s long-term prospects at the club while leaving the player frustrated.
Hudson-Odoi’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2024, with the youngster having previously signed a contract extension back in 2019. He has almost 100 competitive appearances for Chelsea to his name overall, but his lack of minutes could soon see him depart the club, sooner rather than later.
Does A Move To Dortmund Make Sense?
After struggling to make an impact at Chelsea, Callum Hudson-Odoi is almost crying out for a smart Bundesliga club to rescue him and give him the opportunity to make his ultimate breakthrough in professional football.
However, while Borussia Dortmund are naturally the right choice for any youngster, a move to Ruhrpott might not make much sense for the Chelsea winger right now. Much like the Blues, the Black and Yellows have an abundance of quality attackers who remain Marco Rose’s first-choice options including Marco Reus, Giovanni Reyna, Thorgan Hazard Julian Brandt and new signing Donyell Malen.
Moreover, Rose’s tactical philosophy usually favours centrally oriented players rather than wide wingers. As such, Hudson-Odoi could find it difficult to make the desired impact.
As for Chelsea, keeping hold of the Englishman might be the wiser option as well. Although the club undisputedly boasts the services of some excellent attackers, the likes of Ziyech, Pulisic do face an uncertain future and given the long and strenuous schedule of English football, Hudson-Odoi’s presence in the Chelsea camp should give Thomas Tuchel the needed depth going forward.
