In a recent report, The Athletic revealed that Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson is expected to pen a new contract to extend his stay at Anfield. It is understood that the Reds midfielder will end the uncertainty surrounding his future by signing a long-term deal with the Merseyside club.
Henderson’s Influential Role At Anfield Despite Recent Injury Concerns
Henderson managed to be an influential presence in Liverpool’s squad last season but missed a lot of key games because of injury. The 31-year-old registered one goal and one assist in 28 matches for the Reds in the previous campaign across all fronts.
The England international anchored the midfield quite well as he averaged 1.1 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, 1.2 clearances, 0.7 shots and 0.7 key passes per game in the 2020-21 Premier League campaign. He was also an excellent distributor of the ball from midfield, based on his pass completion rate of 87.3% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Henderson’s overall game has aged quite gracefully but the Three Lions star needs to steer clear of injuries if he wants to lead his team back to the top of English football over the next few seasons. Committing his long-term future to the Anfield club would allow him to concentrate solely on being productive on the pitch which will bode well for Liverpool this season.
Henderson Is Expected To Pen A New Contract At Liverpool: Good Move For Everyone Involved?
Henderson has successfully transformed himself into a deep-lying holding midfielder and can play the ‘quarterback’ role quite well for Liverpool. He can string together some decent short and long passes and is usually a powerful striker of the ball from long range.
The 64-time England international is a natural leader who can get the best out of his teammates and can get stuck in with some solid tackles to earn possession back for his team. He hardly gives away the ball and can read the danger quickly to make a few crucial clearances as well. However, Henderson needs to overcome his injury problems if he wants to lead Liverpool to even more success in the coming seasons.
At the moment, Henderson’s contract extension will be a good move for both the player and the Merseyside club as he is far too important for Klopp to lose in the near future. The Reds would be better of retaining their best players for the long run and the former Sunderland talent definitely fits into that category. At 31, the English sensation still had a few good years left in him to perform at top gear, so Henderson’s renewal will be another step in the right direction for the Reds this summer.
