According to Eurosport, Tottenham have joined the race to sign Ismaila Sarr. The Watford winger has emerged as the latest target for the north London giants as they look to further strengthen their attacking ranks. The Horners, though, are determined to keep hold of their prized asset and are expected to ask in excess of £50 million for his services.
Ismaila Sarr’s Success At Watford
Ismaila Sarr has proved to be a massive success for Watford since joining the club in 2019. The explosive winger enjoyed a Premier League breakthrough in his first season at the club, scoring five goals and six assists. He was one of the only positive prospects for the Hornets during the 2019/20 campaign as they were eventually relegated.
Sarr was expected to return to the top-flight after Watford’s relegation, but he ended up remaining at Vicarage Road. It turned out to be a boon for the club, with the attacker ending up becoming the driving force behind their push for promotion.
In 39 Championship encounters, he effectively scored 13 goals while chipping in 10 assists, making him one of the most productive players in the second division.
Apart from productivity, Sarr made quite a name for himself due to his pace, aggression and tenacity. All of these qualities have helped him become a formidable attacking weapon in the Premier League and the Senegalese international certainly has the potential to emulate his fellow countryman Sadio Mane in the future.
Do Tottenham Need Another Winger?
Tottenham Hotspur have appeared quite active in the transfer market this summer, with Fabio Paratici notably being able to sanction the acquisition of Bryan Gil in the attacking department.
The young Spaniard should offer some much-needed variety in the final third, especially in the right-wing position. But with Harry Kane facing an uncertain future at the club, the Lilywhites may require one additional wide attacker.
There is no doubt that Kane’s potential departure will force Nuno Espirito Santo to deploy Son Heung-Min in a more central role, thus creating a vacuum in the left-wing position. That is where someone like Ismaila Sarr can fit in effortlessly, directly competing with the likes of Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn.
In terms of style of play, Sarr is quite similar to Bergwijn. But the Senegalese international has clearly settled in much better in England than his Dutch counterpart, so in many ways, he could be an upgrade over the former PSV man.
However, Spurs should certainly look for a way to negotiate the price of Sarr, whose £50 million valuation is exceedingly high, to say the least.
