According to Fichajes, Tottenham are eyeing a move for Sergio Aguero. The Barcelona forward is facing an uncertain future at the club despite arriving in Catalonia earlier in the summer. It appears the shock exit of Lionel Messi has angered the Argentine, thus putting Tottenham on alert. However, the Lilywhites are set to face stiff competition from London rivals Chelsea.
Sergio Aguero’s Rollercoaster Ride This Summer
Sergio Aguero moved to FC Barcelona at the end of May, putting an end to his decade long career at Manchester City. He was signed by the Catalans with the promise of playing alongside Lionel Messi, with whom he shares a close relationship on and off the pitch.
The two were involved in Argentina’s historic Copa America triumph that put an end to their 28-year trophy drought. Although Aguero didn’t play a key role in the campaign, he was certainly brought in at Barca to replace Luis Suarez.
Often celebrated as one of Premier League’s greatest ever attackers, there are absolutely no doubts over Aguero’s pedigree at the highest level of football. The forward has a stellar record of scoring 260 goals in just under 400 competitive appearances for Manchester City, helping them win five Premier League titles.
With over 100 appearances for the Argentine national team, Aguero’s record of scoring 40 goals also puts him ahead of legends like Hernan Crespo, Mario Kempes and Diego Maradona. In many ways, Aguero himself is a legend in Argentine footballing history.
A Realistic Deal For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur’s potential acquisition of Sergio Aguero would be quite a story, given the player’s decade long history at Manchester City. The fact that he joined Barcelona only a few months ago should further deepen the woes, not just for Barca fans but also for the Man City supporters.
His experience and pedigree at the highest level of football are undeniable, and though the forward has experienced a slight decline, he should be an ideal short-term replacement for Harry Kane. The Englishman, in turn, is being linked with a move to Etihad, thus adding a further twist to the tale.
However, signing Aguero could be a difficult ask for Tottenham, given the legal battles that could ensue between the player and the club, in case the forward desires to leave Camp Nou. Not to mention, the Argentine international was a part of Barca’s squad that faced Juventus in the Joan Gamper Trophy recently, donning the number 19 kit.
Tottenham themselves may find it difficult to attract Aguero as they cannot offer Champions League football. Moreover, the player’s history at Man City should prevent him from returning to England, merely out of respect.
