Manchester City faced off against Leicester City at Wembley Stadium earlier this evening as they looked to secure a win and lift the Community Shield trophy. Both sides fought tooth and nail in the first 45 minutes but struggled to be clinical in the final third as they went into the half-time break with a goalless scoreline.
It was a tightly fought contest in the second half as well but there was a twist in the tale as the Foxes scored an 89th-minute winner courtesy of Kelechi Iheanacho’s penalty. The match ended with Man City losing the game by a narrow 1-0 scoreline.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player performed during the match against the Foxes.
GK: Zach Steffen – 7/10
He made some important saves at the back and was tidy with his passing. However, Steffen couldn’t do much about Iheanacho’s excellent penalty in the 89th minute which ruined his hopes of a clean sheet.
RB: Joao Cancelo – 7/10
Cancelo was solid when defending inside his half and made a few promising runs in the Leicester half.
CB: Ruben Dias – 7/10
The Portuguese centre-back was strong in the air and cleared the danger when required. He also distributed the ball quite well from the back but there was no clean sheet for him today.
CB: Nathan Ake – 5/10
Ake kept things solid on the defensive end of the field for most of the game. However, he was guilty of giving away a cheap penalty which cost his team the result.
LB: Benjamin Mendy – 6/10
The Frenchman did what was asked of him defensively but struggled to influence the game in the final third.
CM: Cole Palmer – 7/10
Palmer got stuck in with a few tackles and created two key chances in the attacking third of the field. He also pulled off some quick sprints going forward but was replaced in the second half.
CM: Fernandinho – 6/10
The Brazilian veteran won a few aerial duels but struggled to get a foothold in the game.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 7/10
The German midfielder was a constant threat in the final third and probably should have found the back of the net during his time on the field. He got substituted after the hour mark.
RW: Riyad Mahrez – 6/10
Mahrez was always willing to have a shot at goal but was not clinical in front of the Foxes goal.
ST: Ferran Torres – 5.5/10
The Spaniard was ineffective in the opposition half and never looked like he had a goal in him.
LW: Samuel Edozie – 7/10
The 18-year-old was full of energy and had a couple of lively moments in the attacking third. He made several dangerous runs down the left wing and put on a good show today.
Substitutes:
CM: Rodri – 6/10
He passed the ball well and didn’t put a foot wrong.
LW: Jack Grealish – 6/10
Man City’s new summer signing, Grealish hardly gave away the ball and made one good chance after coming off the bench.
CM: Bernardo Silva – 6/10
Silva added some energy to Man City’s midfield.
RW: Ben Knight – 6/10
The talented youngster produced an encouraging cameo as a substitute.
