In a recent report, Globo Esporte revealed that Newcastle United are showing interest in Corinthians midfielder Ederson, who is currently playing on loan at Fortaleza. It is understood that the Magpies are eyeing a move to bring the Brazilian whizkid to St. James’ Park before the end of this month (via Globo Esporte).
Ederson’s Impressive Form At The Alcides Santos Stadium This Season
Ederson is having a productive loan spell at Fortaleza where he has established himself as a key figure of their midfield. The 22-year-old has made 29 appearances for the Brazilian outfit this season, netting two goals and securing three assists across various competitions.
The Campo Grande-born sensation has been in fine form for Fortaleza as he is averaging 2.1 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 1.6 clearances, 2.5 shots, 0.5 key passes and 1.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Brasileirao. He has even distributed possession accurately from midfield after completing 81.6% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
The way Ederson has been playing of late, Newcastle will do well to lure him to the Premier League before the transfer window slams shut later this month. At 22, the Brazilian midfield ace has a lot of room to grow into a world-class footballer someday. Hence, he would be a decent, long-term option for the Magpies to pursue in this off-season.
What Will Ederson Bring To Tyneside?
Ederson enjoys playing in a box-to-box role as he can influence the game at both ends of the pitch. He can get stuck in with a few tackles to hamper the opponent’s flow in the game at the centre of the park. Ederson is also quite versatile as he can play as a defensive midfielder or operate in a box to box role in midfield. He can even fill in as a right-back if needed.
The Brazilian prospect has got the hunger to win possession back for his team and can also contribute by scoring and setting up some crucial goals for his side. At such a young age, Ederson has already begun to shine in Brazilian football, so he could be a good addition to Steve Bruce’s squad this summer.
The South American youngster has what it takes to compete with Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff for a place in the Newcastle starting XI next season. He will bring some much-needed depth to Bruce’s midfield that might be enough for the Magpies to avoid getting dragged into another relegation dogfight in the future. All in all, Ederson will be a decent choice for Bruce to consider during this summer transfer period as he has the potential to become a fan-favorite at St. James’ Park in the years to come.
