In a recent report, The Daily Mail mentioned that Newcastle United are showing interest in recruiting Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Oliver Skipp this summer. It is believed that the Magpies boss Steve Bruce is a big admirer of the English midfield ace and could move in for him during this summer transfer window (via The Daily Mail).
Skipp’s Impressive Loan Spell At Norwich City
The 20-year-old had a solid loan spell with Norwich City last season as he managed to establish himself as a key member of their midfield. Skipp found the back of the net once and secured two assists in 47 matches for the Canaries in the previous campaign across various competitions.
The English talent was a commanding presence at the centre of the Norfolk club’s midfield after he averaged 2.2 tackles, 1.1 key passes and 1.0 clearances per 90 minutes in the EFL Championship. He was even exceptional when distributing the ball from midfield based on his pass success rate of 88% in the English second division (stats via whoscored).
Skipp showed plenty of promising signs during his time at Carrow Road. Hence, it is no surprise that Newcastle are interested in signing him as they are in dire need to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new campaign.
What Will Skipp Bring To St. James’ Park?
Skipp has a high work rate and can pass the ball quite well from midfield. He is a tough-tackling midfielder who has got the hunger to secure the ball back for his team. The English youngster can put his foot through the ball to clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. He can even put his body on the line to block a goal-bound shot from the opponent on the defensive end of the pitch.
The Tottenham starlet has the potential to become a class act in midfield someday which makes him a decent option for the Magpies to consider in this summer transfer window. Skipp will bring a lot of bite and steel to Steve Bruce’s midfield and offer some healthy competition for Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey at St. James’ Park next season.
At 20, the English whizkid has the room to grow into a future star in English football as long as he can ensure regular game time over the next few years. Bruce has the luxury to offer him such a role that could help the Magpies convince the player to seal a move to Tyneside before the transfer window slams shut later this month.
