Manchester United, for a long time, have been in search of cover on the right side of their defence. Express UK has recently claimed that current Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier is on the verge of joining Manchester United as ‘details over personal terms emerge’.
Impressive Recent Form To Get Manchester United Excited
The former Burnley man has been speculated to join Manchester United over the last two seasons. Trippier’s stock value in the transfer market continues to rise in recent times. The Englishman was part of the Atletico Madrid side which won the Spanish First Division. He was also impressive whenever he was employed by Gareth Southgate during England’s Euro 2020 campaign.
Now almost 30, Trippier has been an integral part of the Atleti set-up with his overlapping capabilities and precise crosses. His dead-ball ability has been eye-catching since his time at Tottenham Hotspur and he continues to master the same as one of his specialities.
Diego Simeone had been deploying him and Marcos Llorente alternatively in the right-back spot during the last season at Metropolitano. Trippier amassed 53 appearances for Atleti over the last two seasons raking up 11 assists to his name. (via transfermarkt)
Why Manchester United Need To Sign Trippier?
Last season ended with a defeat for United at the hands of Unai Emery’s Villareal in the UEFA Europa League Final. To compensate for the rather disappointing nature of the conclusion, United have jumped into the transfer market to bring in quality players.
Tom Heaton was brought in to rival the goalkeeping spot, while Jadon Sancho was added to the squad to introduce a bit of flair. Former Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane looks to shore up the shortcomings of Lindelof and Bailey at the back. All things considered, United still need a versatile full-back as there is hardly any contribution from the back going forward as is imperative in the modern game.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka looked like a one-trick pony for the most part of last season, with little to no contribution up the field. While his defensive capabilities are beyond any doubt, his attacking contributions are under scrutiny at United. Trippier comes in at that exact spot of bother and fits in perfectly into the plans of the gaffer. His outlay from the right-hand side of defence will probably cover up the sluggish pace of Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay. Trippier can also be deployed on either side of defence giving Solskjaer an array of options considering the number of games United will have to be involved in.
While Trippier’s arrival will mainly be to rival Wan-Bissaka’s spot for the right-back role, he will also bring with him his vast experience and diverse capabilities up the field for United.
