According to El Gol Digital, Arsenal are among clubs interested in Marco Asensio. The Real Madrid playmaker is not valued by newly appointed head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Although Los Blancos are yet to put ut a definitive stance on Asensio’s future, he is courted by Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta valuing him highly. However, the Gunners are set to face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid and Tottenham in the pursuit of the Real Madrid star.
Marco Asensio’s Struggles At Real Madrid
Once regarded as the future of Real Madrid, Marco Asensio is one of many players who has endured a halt in progress at Santiago Bernabeu over the past couple of years. Unlike other players like Rodrygo, Isco or Martin Odegaard, though, game-time has not been a problem for the Spaniard.
Instead, the playmaker has suffered from various injuries throughout the past couple of years. As a matter of fact, the 25-year-old is yet to muster 2,000 minutes of league football in any of his five seasons at Real Madrid.
His performances haven’t been particularly eye-catching either. Last season, Asensio featured in 35 league matches for Real Madrid, scoring just five goals and providing two assists. His lack of productivity turned out to be quite detrimental for Los Blancos as they missed out on the title to cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid.
What Can He Bring To The Table?
Despite his struggles in recent years, Asensio is still valued as a talented forward. A right-winger by trade, the former Espanyol prodigy is quite versatile and can operate on both flanks and even as an attacking midfielder, if necessary.
However, what makes him such a sought-after talent is his technical prowess, dynamism and ability to take on defenders. He is indeed an excellent chance creator in the final third while his tendency to drift infield makes him quite an accomplished attacker.
Is He A Good Option For Arsenal?
Arsenal are in dire need of an attacking midfielder after Odegaard’s return to Bernabeu. In Asensio, though, they might find themselves an able alternative who is more than capable of adding another dimension to the club’s attacking play.
However, the Spaniard is clearly not in the best shape at the moment, with various fitness issues stalling his development at Real Madrid. Things may get even more difficult in the Premier League which demands even more athleticism.
Not to mention, Asensio has struggled to offer any productivity to the table in recent years. It could be problematic for an Arsenal side already criticised for their lack of scoring prowess. As such, splashing €40 million on Asensio might not be a prudent move from Arteta, who should certainly look to bring Odegaard back to Emirates this summer.
