Recent reports from Eurosport state that West Ham United are keen on signing Manchester United’s forgotten centre-back Phil Jones in the ongoing transfer window as David Moyes looks set to add to his options at the back.
Irrespective of the length of his present contract (which runs until 2023), the Red Devils might let Jones leave on a free transfer this summer in order to make some space in the squad and get his £75,000 weekly wages off the book.
The Hammers are keen on signing him up, but according to reports, they are planning to offer him a highly incentivised contract based on the number of appearances.
The 29-year-old defender’s injury record is a worrying point as he has failed to manage a single first-team appearance for United in the last 18 months.
Earlier this year, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shared his sympathy with the injury-plagued defender.
“It’s disheartening; it’s the worst thing for a footballer.” the Norwegian tactician said.
“When you’ve got injuries, it can take your passion away, your chance to play football away. He’s a top footballer; he was in the World Cup squad two years back. He was brilliant when I came here.”
“I’ve been through bad injuries myself, and it might take your belief away and your enjoyment away.”
Good Move For Both Parties?
Since joining United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011, Phil Jones has featured 224 times for his side – winning one Premier League title, one FA Cup and the Europa League over the course.
However, chances of him featuring for the Red Devils in the near future are really bleak as he is way down the pecking order at this moment.
Given the fact that he is desperate to take up a new challenge in the Premier League, a move to the London Stadium would suit him perfectly.
Newcastle United, Southampton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Burnley are also keeping tabs on his situation.
