El Gol Digital has recently reported that Real Madrid are set to demand €30m for Marco Asensio this summer. It has been stated that Los Blancos are open to cashing in on the Spanish playmaker as they are hoping to cut off some of the deadwood from their squad ahead of the new campaign (via El Gol Digital).
Asensio’s Underwhelming Form At The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
Asensio experienced an inconsistent season at the Spanish capital as he struggled to be productive for them in the final third. The 25-year-old was involved in 48 matches for the Madrid giants in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net seven times and securing two assists across various competitions.
The Spanish sensation’s performances in the final third were quite up and down after he averaged 1.1 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in the 2020-21 La Liga season. However, he distributed the ball with a lot of conviction based on his pass success rate of 85.1% in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
Asensio has still got two years remaining in his Madrid contract, so Carlo Ancelotti won’t be under immediate pressure to cash in on him during this summer transfer period. However, his form last season was far from convincing which has put his future at the Spanish capital in serious doubt.
Should Los Blancos Cut Asensio Loose This Summer?
When Asensio is firing on all cylinders, he can be an influential presence in the final third as he has excellent close control of the ball that helps him complete some dangerous dribbles in and around the opponent’s penalty box. The Spaniard is a good passer of the ball and can even strike the ball with power and precision from long range. However, he has to figure out a way to get some confidence back in his game and rediscover himself at the highest level.
Sealing a move away from the Bernabeu makes sense for Asensio at this stage of his playing career. At 25, the Spanish attacker is playing at his prime, but he needs to secure regular first-team football next season if he wants to fulfil his true potential.
Real Madrid are going through a difficult period financially which makes it a necessity for them to sell off some of their fringe players like Asensio this summer. The 26-time Spain international is clearly surplus to requirements, so Ancelotti should consider cutting him loose before the start of the new campaign.
