Sky Sports has recently reported that Real Madrid are locked in a three-way battle for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter this summer. It has been revealed that Los Blancos could face competition from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the race to sign the German centre-back during this summer transfer window (via Sky Sports).
Ginter’s Good Form In German Football Last Season
The Freiburg-born talent had a solid campaign at Borussia-Park as he produced a series of commanding displays at the heart of the Monchengladbach backline. Ginter registered two goals and one assist in 46 matches for the German outfit last season in various competitions.
The 27-year-old was a dominant presence on the defensive end of the field after he averaged 0.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per game in the Bundesliga. He even distributed possession relatively well from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 84.8% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Ginter has taken great strides towards improving himself on the defensive end of the field over the past 12 months. Hence Los Blancos will do well to lure him to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium before the start of the new campaign as he could serve as a good replacement for Raphael Varane at the Spanish capital.
What Will Ginter Add To Carlo Ancelotti’s Team?
Standing at 1.91m, Ginter is a towering presence inside his penalty box and doesn’t take too many chances with his clearances. He can use his strong frame to overpower the opposition in the air and can win some important aerial duels for his team.
The German defensive ace can even time his challenges well to secure the ball back inside his half. As mentioned earlier, he is an accurate passer of the ball and would fit Ancelotti’s brand of football quite well at the Bernabeu.
Hence, the Madrid head coach should think about orchestrating a move to secure Ginter’s services this summer. He will add a lot of quality to Ancelotti’s defensive department and is good enough to compete with Nacho Fernandez and Eder Militao for a regular starting spot in Los Blancos’ first team in the coming seasons.
