In a recent report, Eindhovens Dagblad offered an update on Liverpool‘s pursuit of PSV Eindhoven forward Donyell Malen this summer. It is understood that the Reds are still undecided over whether to launch a move for the Dutch striker in this off-season (via Eindhovens Dagblad).
Malen’s Outstanding Form In Dutch Football Last Season
Malen had a terrific season at the Philips Stadion as he produced a run of productive displays as the focal point of the PSV attack. The Weiringen-born talent made 45 appearances for the Dutch giants in the previous campaign, scoring 27 goals and providing ten assists in the process across all fronts.
The 22-year-old was a consistent performer in the final third after he averaged 3.5 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Dutch Eredivisie. He even interchanged possession relatively well with his teammates up top, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 79.6% in the top tier of Dutch football (stats via whoscored).
Malen is in for a very bright future in European football, so the Reds will do well to lure him to the northwest of England during this summer transfer window. The Dutch youngster could also be tempted with a chance to join Jurgen Klopp’s revolution at Anfield as he will get a proper shot at winning some silverware at the highest level.
Should The Reds Step Up Their Pursuit Of Malen This Summer?
Malen is blessed with a lot of pace which he can use to lose his marker in the final third. He can be a delight to watch when he is dribbling at full swing in the opposition half and added plenty of goals and assists to his game last season.
The Dutch whizkid has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates up top and is slowly transforming himself into a lethal finisher inside the opponent’s penalty box. However, only time will tell whether Malen can cope with the physical nature and high intensity of English football if Liverpool decide to move in for him this summer.
The PSV Eindhoven attacker will only get better with each year, so it makes sense for Klopp to step up his pursuit of the promising starlet before the start of the new campaign. He will add a lot of goals and creativity to Liverpool’s frontline and could offer some healthy competition for Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah for a place in Klopp’s starting XI. Malen has what it takes to help the Merseyside outfit reclaim the Premier League title next season which makes him a worthy target for Klopp to pursue during this summer transfer window.
